The Chumash is a Native American group of people that have lived in Camarillo and generally in Ventura county in the coastal areas including both the mainland and Channel Islands, as well as the plains and mountains. Their numbers declined with Spanish settlement of the area. Learn more about their culture at Sycamore Nature Center in Point Mugu State Park and at the cultural center in Thousand Oaks.
The book, Island of the Blue Dolphins, is about the Chumash people.
