Geography

The campus is located on University Drive, off of Lewis Road. It is nestled up against the north end of the Santa Monica Mountains, about six miles from the Pacific Ocean.

Background

California State University Channel Islands is one campus in the California State University. The campus, known by several names, including CSUCI, Channel Islands, The University, C-Sushi, and C-Sucky, was built reusing the existing buildings on the campus of the former Camarillo State Mental Hospital. The campus has a green mission to reduce the need to build by reusing existing buildings. The campus also has a goal of preserving the surrounding agriculture land. In its first two years of existence, the school was an extension of California State University Northridge. The architecture is a mix of re-used of buildings from the time it was the hospital and new modern architecture, a prime example of this is the CSUCI Library.

In 2010, CSUCI was named one of the "Great Colleges to Work For" by "The Chronicle of Higher Education".

Culture

The campus is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of former patients at the now closed Camarillo State Mental Hospital. Ghost hunters tour the campus at night looking for specters. Much of the campus' history is intertwined with that of the old hospital.

Many pop and rock songs were written about the former mental hospital site.

Some of the official campus lore seems to relate to the Chumash tribe that inhabited the area as noted by the mascot Ekho the Dolphin and the plaque near one fountain describing the Rainbow Bridge

Points of Interest

Camarillo Regional Park has its entrance just inside the entrance to the university's campus. CSUCI Bowling Alley exists but is not used on the campus near the art complex
