The Canton Professional Fire Fighters Union, Local 2289, is affiliated with the International Association of Fire Fighters (I.A.F.F.) chartered on May 1, 1974, and the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union (M.P.F.F.U.). Canton organized a volunteer fire department in 1950 before becoming a charter township in 1961. The Township of Canton established a full-time professional fire department in 1972 with nine (9) career members. The Canton Professional Fire Fighters Union currently has a total of 61 personnel. This includes 1 Fire Marshal, 3 Fire Inspector, 3 Battalion Chiefs, 9 Captains and 45 Fire Fighters who are all committed to fire prevention, fire fighting, and emergency medical services.
