Overview

Al’s Burger Shack is a burger shop in Chapel Hill, NC, located a few blocks away from the University of North Carolina’s campus. Al’s puts a modern spin on the classic burger joint by serving fresh, locally sourced food in a old-school burger stand environment.

Al’s founder, Al Bowers, is no stranger to the town of Chapel Hill and its impressive sandwich shop scene. Al Bowers graduated from UNC in 1988, and after working in real estate for years, he switched career paths to the restaurant industry and managed Merritt’s Store and Grill for 2 years before opening his own place. Al’s Burger Shack opened its door on West Franklin St. on September 18th, 2013, aka National Cheeseburger Day.

In September 2017, also on National Cheeseburger Day, Al’s opened a second location in Chapel Hill’s Southern Village. This spot offers more seating and parking options for patrons, as well as a larger menu.
