Overview
Southern Season is a food and novelties store that offers unique and high-quality kitchen and food items. In addition, it is host to an on-demand deli, bakery, chocolatier, and a four-star rated restaurant (Weathervane). Its Chapel Hill location is at University Place, formerly known as University Mall. Southern Season also has locations in Raleigh, N.C., Richmond, Va., and Charleston, S.C.
Southern Season also operates a mail-order online store.

Store Offerings
Southern Season caters to the connoisseur of food preparation and consumption. It also offers classes taught by professional chefs. Unlike a grocery store, there are intentional missing areas such as dairy refrigerators and green produce. Instead, niche areas such as spices and kitchen equipment are on display in an open format. Southern Season carries many products made in North Carolina and from the South.

History
Southern Season began as A Southern Season in 1975 as a coffee roastery owned and operated by Michael Barefoot. It became a destination gourmet specialty food and cooking items store, located in Chapel Hill's Eastgate Shopping Center in a location now occupied by a Trader Joe's store. It moved to Chapel Hill's University Mall (now called University Place) in 2003, occupying a 59,000-square-foot space. Ownership of the company transferred to TC Capital Fund, locally owned investment group. The new ownership dropped the "A' from the name of the store and launched into an expansion program. Southern Season has since opened stores in Raleigh, N.C., the Charleston, S.C., suburb of Mt. Pleasant and in Richmond, Va. (Source: Wikipedia.)
