Vimala Rajendran opened her Curryblossom Café in 2010 with funding from the Chapel Hill community. Since then, Vimala has worked to give back to her community in many ways like providing food for protests, vigils, social movements and more. Vimala Rajendran even ran for Chapel Hill Town Council in 2021. Overall, Vimala's Curryblossom Café strives to be more than just a restaurant to the Chapel Hill community.

Vimala believes that access to food and water is a basic human right. She also believes that interdependence and mutual aid is vital to a communities success. To show her commitment to the community, Vimala is a living wage employer. She pays her employees between $20 and $25 per hour, but Vimala believes that this amount is still not enough.

During the pandemic, Vimala's Curryblossom Café transitioned to only taking takeout orders which left sales down. Still, Vimala's Curryblossom Café provided hundreds of meals to communities in need during this time. Now, Vimala's Curryblossom Café is open for both takeout and in-restaurant dining.

Vimala's Curryblossom Café also works with Table 22 to bring weekly meals to Chapel Hill residents.
