Seminary Co-op is a bookstore with two locations in Hyde Park, originally founded by seventeen book lovers who invested ten dollars each. Still member-owned, the bookstore strives to serve the diverse reading needs of the University and Hyde Park communities. Members over the years include Saul Bellow, Paul Ricoeur, Susan Sontag, Harold Washington, and Michelle Obama.

Originally located in the labyrinthine basement of a Seminary building at 58th and University, the main store is now one block east at 575 S. Woodlawn, and features a wide selection of University Press titles and sections in a space designed by Co-op members Stanley Tigerman and Margaret McCurry. The secondary store, 57th Street Books, which opened in 1983, is located on the corner of 57th and Kimbark and specializes in children’s books, cookbooks, travel guides, mysteries, and science fiction.
