Almond Tree (MLSC) Almonds are the tasty nuts of the almond tree. Almonds (pronounced "Aă-mun" locally) are produced in Almond Orchards and are popular world-wide. The vast majority of almonds come from California! There are many things one can do with almonds, including mindlessly munching on the roasted variants while writing pages for wikis. Feel free to write your love and uses for almonds here. If you're a lover of almonds or any other kind of nut, be sure to check out the annual California Nut Festival in Chico.

Legend has it that Chicoans have their alternative pronunciation for the word because they are "almonds" when they are on the tree, but during harvest the machines "shake the L out of them."

There are very few almond orchards left in Chico, although in the past they were much more common (note the name of the Almond Orchard shopping center to get a sense of how common they once were). There is, notably, still a relatively large plot of them on West 8th Avenue that has remained undeveloped. Most of the almonds grown in the area are grown outside town, most notably in the nearby community of Durham. When driving over the Midway to Durham, once passes through many orchards, which can be quite a beautiful sight when the trees are blooming in the spring.

The Chico Nut Company is a local processor of the venerable almond and walnut.
