The Dick Lewis Firepit is a firepit and memorial in Alumni Glen on the Chico State campus. It was built by the Delta Psi Delta fraternity. The Dick Lewis Barbecue was constructed in the 1959 school year. Dick Lewis was a hero of gigantic proportion to his community, his family and his college fraternity Delta Psi Delta. Dick Lewis volunteered in 1942 with two other close student friends and fraternity brothers to serve as Marines in WWII. He completed his tour of duty in 1945 with Meritorious Commendations. Dick went back to protect his country in the Korean Conflict where he was killed. Dick at this time had many medals including the Silver Star, Presidential Unit Citation, Purple Heart and others. This barbecue also served as a memorial for six of his fraternal brothers that went into the Second World War. Henry Staple , Ray Lobdell , Clinton Caywood , Ashley Guynn , John Cummings, and Gail Moore Jr. all gave their lives for our country. The BBQ also represented these fine young men and provided a place of remembrance for their families as well. Also, in 1969 a rededication of the Dick Lewis Barbecue was made after Delta Psi Delta had three more volunteer Marines return from the Vietnam War, all injured in the line of duty and Purple Heart recipients. The BBQ was removed in 2011 to make way for the new Alumni Glen project. The Dick Lewis plaque was polished and re-installed on the West face of the new seating wall.
