Dog Killer, Chico's most notorious punk/thrash metal band, got their start in Chico in the mid-80s ¹, performing in the area until 1989. The band's 1986 self-released album Last Act of a Desperate Band took the local music scene by storm.

Throughout the 90s the band played several last reunion shows², and they played their final farewell gig in 2007 (they swear it was really the final, final reunion). The band still maintains a presence on MySpace
