"Any place on Rancho Chico is at your disposal except my dooryard." - John Bidwell, 1887
John Bidwell was in Europe when the legislature announced that they would be establishing a Northern Branch of the State Normal School. They were considering sites including Marysville and Red Bluff. A committee of citizens formed to lobby the legislature to name Chico as the home of the new school. Bidwell sent a cablegram to the committee that they were welcome to any piece of land on his ranch with the exception of his dooryard. The property donated for this purpose was valued at $15,000. The "dooryard" has become Children's Playground.
