Marsh Junior High is one of Chico's three (or four if you count Hooker Oak School) junior high schools. Their mascot is the Gators. It is the newest junior high in town, opening it's doors in 1999. It was named after Hank Marsh, a local attorney. Initially, the school only accommodated seventh and eighth grade students, however beginning with the 2000-2001 school year, sixth grade classes were added. The school was originally planned in two phases with the second phase of buildings essentially mirroring the first. However, due to funding, the second phase was scrubbed and the remaining funds facilitated the construction of the gymnasium approximately 3-4 years after the schools doors originally opened.

At the time of it's opening, the campus featured state-of-the-art facilities and equipment including an award-winning library and a home economics kitchen outfitted with top-of-the-line culinary equipment. Prior the gyms construction, physical education classes were conducted almost exclusively outdoors, utilizing the cafeteria or theater room for indoor activities as needed.

Due to the Chico Unified School District's decision to forgo building the proposed Canyon View High School, the funding provided for the project via a bond measure was diverted to the existing public schools, including MJHS. This funding provided for two massive solar panel arrays to be constructed on the East and West sides of the campus, significantly improving the campuses sustainability.
