Pastels on the Plaza was a downtown family event sponsored by the Chico Area Recreation District. Novice and professional artists were provided an opportunity to express themselves with chalk on a sidewalk square surrounding the City Plaza. The artwork ranged from simply to fantastic and it's fun to see the creations in progress as well as just strolling through the area after all the artists are long gone, but the art remained. The fun fall event occurred for several years ending in the early 2010's.

Squares were purchased by anyone who wanted to participate. Novice individuals, families and organizations may purchase a 4 foot square for $20. Professional artists are encouraged to apply for an 8 foot square on "Fine Art Alley" which are sponsored by a local business.

Applications to participate can be found online at http://www.chicorec.com or at the CARD office at 545 Vallombrosa. All chalk is provided. Any outside chalk must explicitly state that it is "lead free" if it is to be permitted.
