The Peace and Social Justice Program plays every Friday at 11:30 am to 1 pm Pacific Time on KZFR Community Radio, 90.1 FM. It was brought to life by longtime peace activist Chris Nelson in 1991 as a result of the Gulf War. Chris, a county public health nurse, produced and hosted the show until 1995, when she stepped down in order to teach a public health class at CSUC. She asked Laurel Blankinship (radio pseudonym "Laurel Avalon") and CSUC professor Beau Grosscup to take over the job of weekly production and hosting of the program. Laurel and Beau have been alternating the duties ever since. Laurel and Beau's hosting and production styles are very different: Laurel, a longtime social justice activist and paralegal at the non-profit legal aid organization, Legal Services of Northern California, interviews authors and activists who write about and talk about social justice issues and peace. She also features interviews with local activists. Almost all of her interviews are conducted live, either in studio or via telephone. Laurel's list of interviewees has included noted people's historian Howard Zinn, political commentator and one-time candidate for Governor of California Arianna Huffington, columnist Norman Solomon, radio commentator Jim Hightower, former CNN newsman Peter Arnett, former Guantanamo detainee and author of "Enemy Combatant: a British Muslim's Journey from Guantanamo" Moazzam Begg, and folksinger Richie Havens.
Beau Grosscup, a political science professor at CSUC and an internationally-recognized expert on terrorism, usually does a monologue of information on current events, with humor and biting satire sprinkled in the mix.
