COMMUNITY-EDITED WEBSITE REACHES 3000 PAGES
Chico, CA, April 19, 2009 – Chico Wiki (www.chicowiki.org), a community-edited website of interlinked pages similar to Wikipedia but specific to Chico and the surrounding area, has achieved a landmark page count. Thanks to contributions from community members, as of April 19, Chico Wiki now has reached 3000 pages about all aspects of life in Chico. Founded by Butte College student Ryan Mikulovsky in 2006, Chico Wiki is the free online information resource about Chico by the community members who call it home. Unlike many community information sites, Chico Wiki does not have any advertising and was not created as a money making venture. It is not-for-profit and is comprised solely of volunteer editors. Slowly building a base of reliable editors, the wiki has grown from one college student’s attempt at creating a place for collecting information about Chico to a community effort to share knowledge.
Editors of Chico Wiki have contributed articles that include the everyday to the most obscure. From restaurant listings and ideas for outdoor activities to the local music scene and urban legends, there is something to interest anyone living in or visiting Chico. Especially popular is the ever changing “Mystery Picture” in which puzzling photographs from within Chico are posted in order to try to stump the community. Guesses are made until the mystery is finally solved, at which point a new picture is posted by someone in the community and the guessing starts all over again. Chico Wiki also includes an extensive list of restaurants in town, including reviews, which is organized by type of food, and has a “Random Restaurant Selector” that will recommend a listing at random for the more indecisive diner. If it is in Chico and it is relevant to the community, it has a place on Chico Wiki.
Of particular interest to some of the current editors is the history of Chico. This can be seen in many of the pages which have historical photographs juxtaposed with present appearances. Great efforts have been made to gather historical information about Chico, and to make that information available to the community. A wiki is always going to be a work in progress, as there will always be more that can be written about every topic of interest, but contributions from community members will allow Chico Wiki to reach its full potential as the definitive resource on all things Chico. The interests of any and all contributors are welcomed on Chico Wiki, as it is a resource about Chico, for Chico and by citizens of Chico.
Chico Wiki is the one place on the internet where you can share your knowledge and thoughts about anything in the city of Chico or even its small satellite towns. In fact, many cities seem to have quite a “learning curve” for newcomers. Why not help people avoid all the trouble of finding the perfect pizza parlor or the best swimming hole at Bidwell Park?
