Sigma Chi History

Sigma Chi is one of the largest international all-male college fraternities, with chapters at universities in Canada and the United States. Sigma Chi was founded in 1855 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio when members split from Delta Kappa Epsilon. Sigma Chi has seven founding members: Benjamin Piatt Runkle, Thomas Cowan Bell, William Lewis Lockwood, Isaac M. Jordan, Daniel William Cooper, Franklin Howard Scobey, and James Parks Caldwell.

The fundamental purpose of this fraternity is to promote the concepts of Friendship, Justice and Learning within its membership.

As of 2008, Sigma Chi Fraternity consists of nearly 300,000 initiates and 237 active chapters at colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada, and 149 alumni groups and alumni brothers around the world. Every two years, delegates from all undergraduate chapters and alumni chapters meet for the Grand Chapter - in which Grand Officers, the International Sweetheart of Sigma Chi, and the International Balfour Award winner are elected, and revisions to the General Fraternity's Governing Laws and Ritual are proposed and debated.

Most recently Sigma Chi was honored by the United States Congress on its 150th anniversary on June 13th, 2005, becoming the only Greek letter society so honored.

Kappa Theta Chapter History

The AXE Men

In the fall of 1983, a small group of Chico State men formed a unique relationship with Alpha Chi, a local sorority. The sorority sisters and the group of men together gave way to the creation of a unique idea, the Alpha Chi little brother program. The newly founded relationship served many purposes: allowing the men to be affiliated with the Greek community, and enabling the development of lasting friendships with the women of Alpha Chi.

In the beginning of the Fall 1984 semester, the group had their first Little Brother Rush and subsequent pledge class, known to the campus as the AX Men. The program differed greatly from its counterpart fraternity little sisters. In the Fall of 1987, the AX Men decided not to allow their members to be affiliated with any fraternity and asked for at least a two year commitment from all of the men whom they accepted in to their program. Between 1987 and 1989, the sorority and the little brothers found increasing areas of conflict. Many sorority sisters believed that the AX Men program was becoming too strong and many AX Men felt restricted by the sorority's policies.

Consequently, in the Spring of 1989, the Alpha Chi Alumni Board required the active chapter of the sorority to end all affiliation with the AX Men. The enthusiastic group of young men knew that the bonds they had among themselves were too valuable to sever, and in an effort to maintain the strong brotherhood they founded the local fraternity, Alpha Chi Epsilon. The original AXE house was located at 1341 W. Fourth Street.

The fraternity's quest for excellence continued as the active membership began in the Fall of 1989 to pursue affiliation with the Sigma Chi International Fraternity. After completing the requirements of the petitioning process, the Kappa Theta Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity was installed at Chico State on November 8, 1992.

Leadership and Community Service

The Kappa Theta Chapter of the Sigma Chi Fraternity is a leadership-based organization that strives to involve all its members on campus and in the community. Annually, the Brothers participate in many community service events and philanthropies, such as Up Til' Dawn (St. Jude's Hospital), Bidwell Park Clean Up, Bidwell Park Adopt-A-Picnic Site, Derby Days (Children's Miracle Network), Annual Huntsman Dinner (Huntsman Cancer Institute and Foundation), Habitat for Humanity, the Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation, and many more. Our Brothers are definitely here to make a difference and to build lifelong friendships that last much longer than our years as an undergrad at Chico State. With a strong alumni presence and support, Sigma Chi is dedicated to its mission of building leaders through annual leadership training programs, including the Balfour Leadership Training Workshops and the Horizons Program. The Kappa Theta Chapter is also actively involved in intramural sports, campus events, sorority philanthropy events, brotherhood events, and social events with other sororities.
