South Chico (along with East Chico) is one of the more newly developed areas of Chico. With the building of the Chico Mall in the late 1980s, South Chico has exploded into the retail center of the city. A good general rule to distinguish the boundary of South Chico would be Highway 32's incarnation as 8th and 9th Streets. There's a neighborhood in southern Chico known as Chapmantown. It took its name from Augustus Chapman, a lumber company owner. Present day Chapmantown is loosely defined as the area from Humboldt Rd. to 20th St., and Mulberry Ave.. east to the 20th St. park. Interestingly, Augustus Chapman's mansion is not located in Chapmantown, but two blocks north, between Mulberry and Park Ave. on 12th St. In addition, the Barber neighborhood can be found to the west of Park Ave., between 9th St. and 16th. St., where Diamond Match Factory once called home. Long ago, the president of Diamond Match Company was Ohio Columbus Barber.
