Wine is a form of alcohol which has been very popular for thousands of years. There are several places in Chico which serve or sell wine. Although California is well known for its vineyards, it is very difficult to grow wine grapes in the Chico area due to the extreme summer heat. However, historically, John Bidwell had his own wine producing vineyard at Rancho del Arroyo Chico although they were torn out while courting Annie, a prohibitionist. There had been other vineyards but most eventually vanished. However, as of late there has been a Renaissance of sorts with the replanting of vineyards in the area up through Vina (see Abbey of New Clairvaux).

There are, however plenty of places for the wine connoisseur to go. The Introduction to Wines class in the Chico State Agriculture Department is also very popular. See also Liquor Stores.
