The UFP started behind the Faulkner County Public Library in Conway as a competition between three colleges, University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College, and Central Baptist College, to see who could maintain the best garden.

At the end of the season, the gardens were to be judged on several factors to determine the ‘winner.’

However, as the time passed and gardens were established, something unexpected, though extraordinary, happened. Amidst the work to build three discrete competing gardens, the students and professors involved formed a bond that inspired collaboration more than competition.

They all had similar interests in practicing sustainable growing and living and enjoyed one another’s company to such an extent that they decided to work together.

Before the phenomenon was fully understood the community had formed one big gardening plot that everyone helped to cultivate. They broke the bonds of their college colors and developed relationships with not only students but also professors from the other academic institutions.

Now they currently gather to meet over a meal and talk about sustainable ideals and what is going on in the community and those beyond.  The Urban Garden Project is truly unique and continues to develop as more people join in the journey for change.

Come and join in the fun filled day with the Conway community and help make our city more sustainable!
