Joseph C. Avery (1817–1876) was the founder of Corvallis. Avery moved to Oregon in 1845 with 25 head of cattle. After exploring the western side of the Willamette Valley, he staked out a 640-acre provisional land claim at the confluence of the Marys River and the Willamette River. Part of this land today is Avery Park. In 1851 he surveyed and platted the area and named it Marysville. Joseph Avery, the father of 12 children, died on June 16, 1876. /http://www.bentoncountymuseum.org/timeline/images/19940380437Avery.jpg
