Jess (James) E. Riley was born in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, on or approximately 16 March 1834. He served in Company K, 29th USCT during the Civil War. After the war, he lived in Champaign and worked as a laborer. He died on 14 June 1892 and is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Urbana.
