One hundred local businessmen funded the construction of the Urbana Lincoln Hotel in the hopes of boosting tourism and local business in 1922. Local architect Joseph Royer presented the Tudor design after his original design was rejected for being too commonplace. The hotel opened its doors on November 3, 1923 for the University of Illinois's Homecoming Weekend.
The hotel can accommodate 150 guests and has several dining and lounge spaces. It has been the go-to place for holidays, celebrations, and big dinners for Champana-ites since it opened. Many, many conventions have been held at the hotel.
The hotel was closed in 2010 for renovation. In accordance with a contract with the City of Urbana, the hotel reopened on December 1, 2012, renting 45 rooms on the second floor. The current owner expects to reopen the third and fourth floors by the summer of 2013. The next phase will be to open up the historic Alumni Tap and Library (bar) as well as a karaoke lounge in the basement.
Rooms currently start out at $69/night, with larger king rooms for $79, and a queen fireplace suite at $89.
