From Kate and Bella:

We sorted the tags into common categories and send the file through the course moodle. Some of the bigger ones (like "Arts and Culture" for instance) could definitely be broken down to be more specific.

We currently have a category of "Spanish Tags". This shouldn't be an actual category, at some point somebody who speaks Spanish should sort those into their relevant categories.

As far as tagging guidelines going forward:

  • Do not use acronyms.
  • Tend towards being more specific. "School of Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign" is better than "School of Engineering" and much better than "Engineering". Similarly, "Chinese Cuisine" or "Chinese Language" are more clear than "Chinese"
  • Avoid whole sentences and commentary in the tags.
  • Check to see if there is a tag that already exists for the concept you would like to tag. For instance, no need to create a "punk" tag if "punk music" already exits.
  • Think about other users and what tags would be useful. What kinds of things will people be looking for when they go through the tags? You do not have to tag for every single concept in a page if you do not think they will be useful for people to find pages they need.

[your notes here thanks]

From Michele -

I have noticed that there are absolutely NO pages for atheism here. When looking at the "religious" tags, I wondered if it would be there (though it isn't a religion, it does intersect with these groups). Therefore, I decided to create a tag for "atheist/agnostic/freethinker groups" and a small page with what information I can get. There are a few atheist groups here, so the lack of any at all on the wiki is pretty telling about the population of those who created it and added to it - that they are mainly religious and hadn't even realized atheism as a topic.
