2007-01-07 12:39:56   There food is good but their service sucks. Seems like a bunch of high schoolers running the place. When my friend and I got there, one kid needed to get another guy just to write down my name and my party number. There were two large group tables open but they could have split that up into 4 smaller tables for the rest of us who were waiting. The dumbest thing they did was to tell us to wait outside. Winter time in Davis is in its mid 30s. So we waited outside, it got cold, and then we moved inside and was told again to wait outside. Also, they charge for rice. One dinky bowl of rice is $1 and I agree with some others that rice is ridiculously cheap. There were about 8 workers there, took our food a long time to come. I admit, the food was good, but I felt as though I had a bunch of kids running the place. I've tasted better THai food elsewhere (this includes Davis) and I won't go back again. Yes, now I know there is a waiting area in the back but if you're new, who would have known? Usually they're in the front. —BeeBooBee

  • I read this comment above and found it to be so absurd that I actually wasted my time to register and defend Thai 2k on their behalf. First of all, if you haven't noticed, we live in a college town where approximately 33,000 of the total 100,000 residents are university students. Thai 2K hires young, college students, whom like me, are in desperate need of money. If you have a problem with younger people serving your food, head on over to Thai Bistro where all the servers are 40+ years old. Secondly, Thai 2k only has two tables for parties of 6-8. It wouldn't be smart to split one up just so that you can be seated immediately. There are 13 other tables in the restaurant that can accomodate your party of four. If you ask me, it makes sense that they asked you to wait for another table. Also, I don't know if you're familiar with with fire codes in California, but you were most likely asked to move outside because you were standing in the front of the door and obviously blocking the entrance. Unfortunately, Thai 2k isn't big enough to keep all of their waiting customers inside where it's nice and toasty. However, you have to give them credit for trying to keep people warm by keeping a patio heater right outside their doors on busy nights. I don't think any other place in Davis (besides Bistro 33) goes to such great lengths to keep their customers warm. Thirdly, Thai 2k doesnt charge $1 dollar for a single bowl of rice. Rather, they charge PER PERSON for rice. For those of you who don't know, it means people who pay get as much rice as they want. So, BeeBoobee, do your research next time and use your brain to think things through before you go on daviswiki and make a fool of yourself. -echelon

2007-01-12 13:39:03   I LOVE 2K Thai. They have always had awesome food. I have never ordered anything I didn't like and we get somethign different everytime we go. The owner is great and her kids are too. I was so amazed to read bad reviews on this site. ... but, I guess I'm glad some people don't like it. Since the word has spread about their yummy goodness they are more crowded and it can be hard to get a table. If you don't like it go someplace else and leave more room for me!! :-) I will agree though that since they have grown in size and hired some more staff the hostesses are not very good. The servers are good though, especially the owners kids. —HeatherMartin

2007-01-28 19:45:30   I ate here for lunch today. Food (chicken w/ eggplant and veggies a la carte; thai iced tea;steamed rice;coconut ice cream) was all good. The service was prompt and polite. The only negative aspect of this visit was that I, too, found a hair in my food. Unless there's something in the Davis water that makes peoples' hair fall out, I would say that it's time that this restaurant scrutinized its hair-wear policy. I personally don't care about hair-I view it as a gratuitous protein source-but some people take issue to it. —LeonardMarque

As I have mentioned long time ago, I'm a regular customer here, and I have always had seen them wear hairnet. Back when I used to be a server in my hometown, the cooks always wore hairnet, but it still fell into food from time to time. I guess it is just an unfortunate accident. Oh, and once a brown hair was found in my table's food, turned out to be her own hair because none of the cooks had brown hair that day.

2007-01-31 20:26:44   I ordered some curry. It wasn't spicy. You call this thai food?? —BrendanBoyle

  • It is such an unfortunate thing that everybody likes to think that thai food always have to be hot. What about other Americans who can't eat hot? Did you know that they have condiments on side for you to add on? Did you ask your server about it?

2007-02-02 04:45:56   They charge extra for the rice, which itself is served in a faux-metal container that appeared nice and large, but holds very small portions of rice. Also, their Coconut juice beverage tasted like canned stuff. meh. —JasonVien

  • All the Thai restaurants in town do the rice the same way and I think Thai restaurants in other towns do too. It's called "per person" which means you pay per person and you get as much rice as you can eat. —KenjiYamada

2007-02-06 12:42:10   Food is good and tasty but a little bit too small. Nice environment. Service was alright. Garlic chicken with basil is the bomb. —AvilaVoom

2007-02-11 16:17:31   2k thai food has the worst service i have ever experienced. how could the waiter mess up on my order when i stated the number clearly and CORRECTLY! she was so dumb. she didn't even know the menu. they should train their rude employee's a whole lot better. i think the girl had a hearing problem too. she always had to ask again what i was saying, again and again and again. no wonder the place was empty. bad service! —AnnaPhan

2007-02-21 11:33:09   Decor is warm and nice, but I have to agree about the service. Really bad. Which is weird because when I go here there are always 6 or 7 people working and only 5 or 6 tables seated. Brought my appetizers after our entrees (big pet peeve) and brought out the wrong curry. Food was on the sweet side, but on par quality-wise with most of Thai restaurants I've been to. —BriannaBetancourt

2007-03-16 00:31:34   The service is terrible and the prices are high because they charged us extra for rice when that dish is supposed to be served over rice. —JohnWong

2007-04-11 17:37:16   Thai food is okay here but not great. Pretty pricey and the service as everyone else states is bad. Too many servers just standing around.... —BrandonToo There are actually only 2-3 servers each shift, meaning the rest of them are only cashiers and bussers or host who aren't able to serve food. Only servers wear white ties.

2007-05-09 17:03:31   This place has traded it's authenticity and catered to the white people of Davis. Not only did they jack their prices up, their food now has no spices, and there's WAY too many servers doing NOTHING! The only reason why I ever go here is for their Tom Yum Soup which is the best in town. However, for real, more authentic food, I'd choose Thai Recipes any day over Thai2k. —AggieAlum

2007-05-09 17:24:01   I used to love this place, I have to agree that sometime in the last few months they changed. The servers dress nicer now, so the price on all the food went up far more than what it should be. I think the earpieces and motorola walkie-talkies are a bit overkill for the size of the place. I'm pretty disappointed. I've been there dozens of times over the last several years (esp after they renovated), but the prices are just silly now. —ES

2007-05-15 00:01:05   I think the food is great! PEOPLE fail to notice that at the beginning of the year minimum wage went up, so most fine dining restaurants have to change their prices to compensate, so i think it is pl that prices went up. and the service, is great. very kind people. some people like to complain that there is too much staff and they dont do anything, simply think, maybe you are just there when its not busy. ive seen them work hard cause it does get busy...so one thing to suggest, sit down, eat, enjoy the food, hopefully service is well, and dont mind the others...seems like those of you, you know who you are, should learn how to enjoy the dining experience rather than pay attention to others too much. feel free to complain about something else, i and many many many friends love the place, but opinion is a freedom, and so is mine to say "i love 2k thai and everything about it, i just wish some people will just lighten up, if you dont like it, dont go.." —BigAj

2007-05-19 15:09:51   I too have notice surprisingly many radio equipped servers and stingy rice. Seems very strange to pay $9.95 for a dish at lunch and not get any rice. With that said their Red Curry without coconut milk is one of the tastiest thai dishes I've had in recently in Davis, and I eat Thai in Davis rather often. —BillBroadley

2007-05-23 11:45:21   i really enjoyed their take-out meals. its a bit expensive, but pretty large portions. i agree with the comments about the lack of spice, though. i wonder if they could add more some upon request? —JoyChu

2007-08-18 20:47:04   Gang Ka-Ree + Pad See Ew + Steamed Brown Rice = Best food in Davis!! —Aggie03

2007-08-19 21:05:20   been to thai bistro and this place- you pay for smaller portion and nicer atmosphere —KaiWan

2007-09-17 06:51:16   Thai 2K can make any dish, including curry, without shrimp paste and oyster sauce, and I've found them to be very accomodating in other matters as well. I can't eat shellfish, and Sophia's curries all have shrimp paste. Hurray for Thai 2k! —Carley

2007-10-28 19:02:08   I'll admit I haven't tried alot of Thai food, but I really liked the Salad with peanut sauce, the lettuce wraps had a nice citrusy flavor, and I really liked the beef curry soup. —Williamo123

2007-11-10 10:55:25   My Pad Thai tasted like barbecue sauce.... not cool. and who the hell would pay $2.50 for a Thai Tea? Absolutely ridiculous. This is NOT, I repeat, NOT the best Thai food in Davis. Go to Thai Bistro!!! (and get the Param Pak) —Domlertylique

2007-11-17 09:55:11   #45 with the duck is quite tasty. small portions, and no spice, but quite tasty if you add your own spice. Papaya salad not so good. too sweet and sogggy. also, not all green papaya- lettuce with green papaya topping. have had much much better. servicce was excellent though. water and teas were refilled the instant it seemed like there was a drop in the level. the staff was polite and not overbearing. —KenichiSan
