Graduate students in the University of Tokyo (UT) and from the LocalWiki Japan team visited Davis and San Francisco from March 16 - 18th, 2016 with a trip to Davis on March 17th-18th.

This activity is supported by "GCL" workshop program in UT.

What is GCL?

An interdisciplinary doctoral program to train top leaders/groups leading a global society(since 2013).One of the program’s contents is Workshop.
We aim to learn skills to clarify the critical social issues, to recommend appropriate solutions and make proposal of vision for the future.

About this Workshop

We did field researches in Muroran and Tomisato, then we wrote and published articles on LocalWiki.
By these activities, we learned how the residents overcame the various problems faced by their regions, by using ICT.
We received positive comments from the regional people.
For example, “By accepting the questions from the students, we learned a lot. At the same time, we also found that we love Muroran more than before! ”

Study&Result

<Activity’s origin>
・Localwiki’s feature:Publicity and being open to update(Democratic)
 -People can bring power to the region democratically and make contribution to regional economic vitality.
➢ Not only the place for sharing information, but also a place to bring people together

・Relationship between people involved:
 -Promoted by existing regional community or people related to this community
 -It seems difficult that if there is no key person in the region
・The significance of non-residents :
 - There are non-resident participants of Localwiki, their point of view is also very important!
➢The necessity to research the development success factors.
➢The possibility to change the point of view of regions and to increase the residents’ participation to activities by involving  the non-residents

<Regional differences>
・Regional differences of industry, geography, resources, culture, could lead to different ways to use LocalWiki
➢Appropriate solutions to different environment are needed, thus the views of both the non-residents and the residents are essential.

Should also research how DavisWiki is different now from the period when it had an active community of editors and determine what impact board decisions, software changes, lawsuits, and other items had on the health of that communit y to prevent repeating the same mistakes. Figure out who else to interview to get a complete picture of the wiki. --Anonymous, leading question comment

Suggest that you interview JabberWokky.  He has been here through all of the many changes.
