Native to desert streams and washes around Palm Springs, the California Fan Palm is easily distinguished from its close relative, the Mexican Fan Palm, by its substantially thicker trunk. Being California desert natives, they're quite drought and frost tolerant, but people usually prefer to grow the Mexican Fan Palm instead.
