Center for Child & Family Studies

The Center for Child and Family Studies (CCFS) is run by the Department of Human and Community Development, and serves as a laboratory for the development of experimental educational programs for children and families. It also serves as an observation laboratory for UC Davis undergraduates and graduate students to complement coursework in child and human development, as well as a research facility for UC Davis faculty and graduate students. The experimental programs and research of the laboratory are intended to advance the field of child development.

The CCFS Early Childhood Lab offers an Infant and Toddler program (ages 6-16 months and 16-24 months) and a preschool program (ages 2-4 and 3-5). Care and instruction is provided by a head teacher, and student interns taking HDE 140/140L (changes on a quarterly basis).

There is a waiting list for all programs. Decisions on enrollment are based on the need to enroll children who will best help the program attain or maintain the diversity desired, and the UCD student/non-student (parents) ratio required.

The reason the rooms are spotless is because the student workers (not those doing the practicum, but the hired "program assistants" work like slaves to make them perfect every day. I was once a student assistant (name has been changed) and I am writing on behalf of the other assistants that we worked in sweatshop-level conditions for minimum wage and little respect. Yes, I understand that a cleaning job could really only garner minimum wage, but the lack of respect was appalling. So if you want to send your child here, demand that those of us "behind the scenes" deserve a little more. —KelliAnn
