We offer courses in neijiaquan or the Chinese internal martial arts, including tai chi, xingyiquan, and baguazhang. The goal is to build a community of internal martial arts practitioners in the Davis area and spread the philosophy as well as physicality of the art.

Course Descriptions

Tai Chi:

The Chinese art of internal power generation! This beginning class focuses on learning the Tai Chi fundamentals of relaxation, vertical alignment, and root – the main ingredients for internal strength. We learn the 37-posture short form and basic drills derived from it. Experienced martial artists are encouraged to take the class as are those with no experience at all. The martial art aspect of Tai Chi is emphasized in order to fully achieve its many health and strength benefits.

Xingyiquan:

Xingyiquan means "form-mind boxing" and is the oldest style of internal martial arts. Like Tai Chi, Xingyi unites the body, mind, and qi (breath) in all movements. Unlike Tai Chi, however, the focus of Xingyi is on forward intent and fast, explosive power. The basic curriculum involves learning the five element fists which correspond to one of the five elements of Chinese philosophy: earth, fire, metal, wood, and water. Each fist has its unique strengths and weaknesses. Practicing them consistently helps one to adapt to an opponent in a fight but will also lead to harmony and focus in ones life.

Baguazhang:

Baguazhang or “eight trigram palm” is a martial art based on concepts from the I-Ching or the Chinese Book of Changes. It is also an internal martial art like Tai Chi. Baguazhang emphasizes the ancient Taoist practice of circle-walking to cultivate balance, smooth foot-work, and a calm mind. Later, techniques and combinations are performed with the center of the circle used as a point of orientation. Baguazhang’s many turns of the body and changes of direction, combined with unexpected angles of attack and defense, often disorient attackers and leave them unable to keep up with the art’s unpredictable nature.
