While technically not a Davis band, the Deftones bassist, Chi Cheng, was born in Davis and spent the first couple years of his life here. As a young adult, Chi attended California State University, Sacramento; it was around this time that he met the other founding members of the band who hailed from Sacramento. Sacramento is therefore generally considered to be the band's hometown.
In the late 1990's and early 2000's, the Deftones garnered nationwide attention and critical acclaim for their unique style of metal music. In 2001, they won a Grammy for their song "Elite" in the category of "best metal performance."
