Foxes are not often sighted in Davis, but they do live here! There are two species of foxes in Yolo County, and both live in Davis: the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteusand the red fox (Vulpes vulpes). Per the California Department of Fish and Game range maps, the gray fox lives in all parts of Yolo County, while the red fox lives throughout the portions of the county that are in the Sacramento Valley.

Both are native species. The red fox was previously believed to have been introduced from other parts of California but is now considered native to the Davis area. The article "Native Red Foxes Living in Valley; Public's Help Soughtby May 29, 2007) reported on this discovery. If you've seen red foxes in the area, you can help with ongoing research by reporting your sightings. See http://foxsurvey.ucdavis.edu/ for more information.
