2 artists embark on a 4-month journey involving over 1-million steps and thousands of plastic bags.
Artists from Davis’ Third Space Art Collective Evan Clayburg and Sally Hensel are embarking on a multinational art project called The Grand Scale Art Walkabout. In this project they’ll be visiting other creative spaces to learn what makes them tick. They’ll go to three locations including Norman, Oklahoma, Todos Santos in Baja California and Mexico City, culminating in a film festival they will host in Davis.
Norman Oklahoma
In Oklahoma, during October 2014, they’ll participate in a residency at an artist space called Dope Chapel. Evan’s project will involve him walking from Los Angeles to Oklahoma, streaming video back to a gallery in Davis and compiling it into a multimedia performance art piece.
Sally will be creating a large scale installation using plastic bags as a medium. She’ll be weaving thousands of plastic bags into a large net that she’ll invite people to interact with, to climb on, take a nap in, etc.
Todos Santos, Mexico
In Todos Santos they’ll be working with and learning from Donna Billick, a Davis based mosaic "rock artist" and master community builder. She’ll be leading a large-scale public art project where local school children will envision and create their own "third space."
Mexico City
Lastly in Mexico City they’ll explore other creative art spaces and work with video production company Kinomorfosis to edit together documentary footage which they will bring back home and share with their own community, via a film festival and collective symposium which they will host in Davis in the Spring of 2015 (around which time they will also fit in their wedding).
