The Grass2Garden project was born in 2014 through the efforts of a group of passionate and dedicated Davisites inspired by the Transition movement (Transition Davis). The primary goal of Grass2Garden is to help Davis residents transform their water intensive lawns into food producing, low-water landscapes. The group wants to promote local resiliency by creating yards that look beautiful, produce food, provide habitat for wildlife and pollinators, and inspire creativity and shared purpose in neighborhoods.
Inspired by many other local urban farming projects and drawing from permaculture principles, the Transition folks merged with the efforts of David Abramson's Abundance Project and partnered with the Solar Community Housing Association in 2014 to apply for a small Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Block Grant administered through the City of Davis.
The small award has allowed the Grass2Garden project to offer to assist eight Davis homeowners in transforming their traditional grass and water intensive landscapes to food producing gardens if income qualified.
Homeowners are asked to host a work party at their house with beverages, food, and bathroom facilities, plus provide $200 in funds or landscaping materials (or assist in acquiring donations instead).
A Grass2Garden volunteer coordinator rounds up volunteers from the community and a local permaculture designer creates plans, leads a kick off workshop, and supervises on the work party installation day.
Homeowners can pay it forward by volunteering at a neighbor's work party as well.
Interested participants can indicate their income qualification by providing proof of participation in CalFresh, a school lunch program, or PG&E Cares.
Community members interested in volunteering can join the Davis Community Garden Team Google Group.
Volunteer coordinator, Chrissy Backman, asks neighbors, "Why dedicate your precious resources towards water-guzzling grass? Let's build community around local food production!"
