The two introduced rats that are found locally are the Roof rat and the Norway rat. The Gambian pouch rat (Cricetomys gambianus) of Florida has not yet established itself in California. Sometimes confused with mice or other rodents. Please do not use D-Con or Tomcat (brodifacoum) rat poison. By doing so you are basically issuing a death sentence to the local predators that catch rats, including owls, raptors, cats, and coyotes.
