Wake Up meditation club is a new secular meditation group that is based of the practice of Zen Buddhism and Thich Nhat Hanh teachings from Plum Village.

The purpose of the club is to introduce students to meditation. They practice silent sitting, walking and guided meditation. No prior experience is necessary as you will be informed and guided through all the meditations. They are meant to not just be used in isolation when one specifically sits to meditate! Quite the contrary. They are meant to act as tools for our everyday needs to alleviate suffering and promote happiness and compassion. Through meditation we can help ourselves to be the best version of ourselves and learn to slow down are lives which in turn allows us to become more mindful of ourselves and everyone and everything around us.

Here are brief descriptions of the three types of meditations we practice:

  1. Silent sitting is meant to encourage us to be able to sit quietly and help alleviate the need to always be doing something. How many times do we sit quietly but feel the constant urge to do something, talk to people or check our phones?! Silence is a beautiful sound and we nurture it through our practice at our Sangha (community).
  2. Walking meditation consists of walking mindfully. It is meant to allow us to find happiness in every step regardless of where we are. In the process we become much more aware of our surroundings and our very own body! Instead of rushing from class to class, this practice encourages us to walk mindfully which in turn help us appreciate our surroundings, appreciate the very fact that we have legs to walk with and ultimately make walking a relaxing activity.
  3. Guided meditation is a mantra based meditation where a set of mantras are repeated on the in-breath and out-breath. These are designed to provide us with a set of tools to become more mindful of our internal dialogue and manifestations and enable us to become more mentally actualized.
