Established
1990

The Funky Butts were formed by four college buddies at the University of North Texas in the summer of 1990. Marathon Man and Slinkmaster MC4 were previously in Dr. Box and the Electric Fishsticks out of Corsicana, Texas in 1986. Andy Chiles (Hai Tex, Ooga Booga) produced the Dr. Box single "Lightly Breaded and Deep Fried" and the Dr. Box instrumental album, Void Where Prohibited. For a brief period, The Blade was part of Stanley Swank and the Handiwipes in Denton from 1989-1990. They played one live show at a Denton farmhouse in 1990 prior to breaking up. The Funky Butts were MC Mike's first band.

Formation

The band formed as the result of a summer ritual called Chili Sunday in which the guys met every Sunday for a chili cookout at Ramsgate Apartments in Denton where they lived. It was during one of these cookouts that Marathon Man and MC Mike wrote their first song together, "Denton Town." Subsequent songwriting sessions produced other gems: "Frat Dudes," "Ooh Baby Baby (Don't Delete My Love)," "My Old Cooked Meat," "Purple-Hatted Lady," "Muscles," and "Dreams."

In the spring of 1991, the band entered Hai Tex Studio in Dallas to record its first and only album, Meat the Funky Butts, produced by Andy Chiles and co-produced by The Blade and Marathon Man. A planned live gig never materialized, and the Funky Butts became inactive following the release of its first and only album.

Recent Developments

The Blade decided to write a fictionalized autobiography combining the band's real-life exploits with a healthy dose of satirical fiction. That book, years in the making, was finally released in the summer of 2012 as Funky Butts: An Unauthorized Autobiography, available as an Amazon Kindle eBook. The band's recorded output, as well as five previous Dr. Box singles, serve as the book's original soundtrack, available for purchase on the Amazon MP3 website and available for streaming on Spotify.
