1800s
- 1839 - John B. Denton, a preacher and lawyer, immigrates to Texas
- 1841 - John B. Denton is killed in a battle against Keechi Native Americans
- 1843 - settlement of the city of Denton begins
- 1846 - Denton County formed
- 1857 - first streets are named
- 1858 - first courthouse is built; a log cabin
- 1860 - IOOF Cemetery founded
- 1866 - first mayor
- 1875 - courthouse burns to the ground
- 1877 - second courthouse built
- 1881 - creation of the Texas and Pacific Railway
- 1884 - Old Alton Bridge is built
- 1890 - North Texas Normal College (now the University of North Texas) was established
- 1895 - current Courthouse on the Square begins construction and is dedicated in 1897
- 1899 - the Wright Opera House is built (now Recycled Books). Denton Record-Chronicle established.
1900s
- 1903 - Girls' Industrial College (now Texas Woman's University) was established
- 1921 - Quakertown residents are forced out to make way for the Quakertown Park
- 1949 - The Campus Theatre is built
- 1954 - Federal Civil Defense Administration moved from Dallas to Denton (later FEMA)
- 1979 - Mable Peabody's Beauty Parlor & Chainsaw Repair opens
- 1980 - "Spring Fling" starts, later renamed Arts and Jazz Festival
- 1998 - Beth Marie's is founded
2000s
- 2006, May - Fry Street area was purchased by United Equities
- 2006, June 27 - The Tomato burns down
- 2009 - first 35 Conferette (then NX35)
- 2010 - February - Snowmageddon
- 2011, Feb 1st-4th - Snowpocalypse
