The third oldest children's museum in the US. Admission is free.

According to the Free Press, the museum opened in 1917 as a joint project of the DPS and the Museum of Art. Since 1925, it has been operating solely under the DPS.

2009 Budget Problems

The museum has a $980,000 annual operating budget. $450,000 of that comes from federal Title I money provided by Detroit Public Schools. Robert Bobb, the DPS Emergency Financial Manager, has cut that portion from the budget, which means the museum may close bu August 2009.

The museum is currently free, but admissions charges are being considered.
