The paper published its first issue on November 23, 2009, but a lack of advertisers, problems with printing, and a lack of retail distribution points caused the paper to suspend operations several days later. Home delivery was planned to start November 30 2009. The paper hoped to resume January 1 2010.

On January 9, 2010, the founders released a statement saying that the paper would not resume publication due to circulation issues. A full version of the statement was not available online.

The paper was founded by Mark and Gary Stern. The two had published a paper during the Detroit newspaper strike in 1967-1968.

The domain name for the paper, http://DetDailyPress.com, expired on June 29 2010.
