Pingree was Mayor of Detroit for four terms, from 1889 to 1896, and went on to become Governor of Michigan. He owned a boot and shoe factory, Pingree and Smith Shoe Co.. His statue lives on at Grand Circus Park. Bad news: he wants out of his chair.
Wikipedia has an excellent article on Pingree (August 30, 1840 – June 18, 1901), and the Detroit News thinks he may be Detroit's finest mayor, but you should know that he also manages his own Twitter account.
