A new nonprofit art museum located in the former Detroit Savings Bank at 5001 Grand River Avenue, corner of Warren Ave. Organized by Russian-born Tate Osten and rehabilitated by a group of artists and local volunteers, the museum was registered as a 501(c)(3) cultural institution in October of 2009. First exhibition "Time and Place" opened on June 12, 2011. The Museum was showcasing light-based arts and included in its three years  of successful exhibitions such masters as William Kentridge, Bill Viola, Joan Jonas, Sebastian Diaz Morales, Jasper Just, Hans Op de Beeck, and many other renowned artists who collaborated with the newborn Museum of Light without any commissions or artists' fees.  The building suffered significant damage during the winter of 2014 (record coldest winter in the previous 100 years in Detroit's history), and was sold to a private individual in 2015. Currently Kunsthalle Detroit maintains its status of a public charitable organization and will re-open soon on the East side of Woodward Avenue in Detroit.
