Formerly University Cultural Center Association, MDI is a nonprofit community development group. It as founded by Wayne State University, the College for Creative Studies, the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Engineering Society of Detroit in 1976. Susan Mosey is the current president.

Sugar Hills Arts District

South of the DIA in the area bordered by Woodward, Forest, John R, and Canfield. The Sugar Hill Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. Includes MOCAD and the N'Namdi Art Center.

In January 2009, the New Economy Initiative gave the UCCA a $2.5M, 2-year grant to leverage $34M in public and private funds fo the district.

Received $900,000 from ArtPlace in 2011 to buy a vacant church on the Northeast corner of the area and begin renovating it into a performing arts building.
