Dedicated on October 12, 1923, the church was intended to serve an increasingly large Mexican Catholic population, which reached 10,000 by 1926. Bishop Michael J. Gallagher located the church at the corner of Kirby and Roosevelt streets, anticipating that the Mexican community would expand into that area of the city.

However, the population stayed centered in Southwest and moved to the edges of the city, and the church eventually closed. It is unclear when the building was taken down.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish was active from 1920 to 1957. The Holy Redeemer Parish, founded in 1880, is the home of Spanish-language Catholic services today.
