The academy has an African-focused curriculum and is considered one of the higher-achieving schools in the district. The school, founded by Ray C. Johnson, is named for Paul Robeson. The school is in the Focus: HOPE neighborhood.

The Academy's building was designed by Albert Kahn. The St. Francis Home for Boys was once in the building.

On May 10, 2011, an early-morning fire that started in an attic spread through the building. The structure and furnishings were damaged by fire, water, and smoke. The schools programs were moved to Thurgood Marshall Elementary.
