Durham Academy is an independent, co-ed, college preparatory day school with a total of 1,145 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The school is separated into four parts: the preschool (pre-kindergarten and kindergarten), the lower school (grades one through four), the middle school (grades five through eight) and the upper school (grades nine through 12). The preschool and lower school are located in the same building and the building they are located in is right next to the Upper School on Ridge Road. The middle school is not far from the upper school and it is located on the corner of Academy Road and University Drive. The school is easily accessible from Duke University West Campus and it is within walking distance of South Square. The tuition at Durham Academy ranges from $12,440 for preschool to $19,980 for the Upper School. Durham Academy offers financial aid to families who wouldn't be able to afford the entire tuition and this aid ranges from $5000 to a full scholarship.
Durham Academy was initially known as the Calvert Method School, which was founded in 1933 in the Durham neighborhood Forest Hills. In 1959 the name of the school was changed to Durham Academy and the school began an expansion which led to the first high school graduating class in 1975.
Durham Academy offers a rigorous and challenging academic curriculum, including 25 AP courses for grades nine through twelve.
Durham Academy offers twelve different sports to students in grades seven through twelve. These sports include field hockey, volleyball, cross-country, tennis, soccer, swimming, basketball, lacrosse, softball,track and field, baseball and golf. Eighty-two percent of students in grades seven through twelve participate in athletics. Fourteen varsity state championships have been won since 2000 and several Durham Academy student-athletes have gone on to Division I programs.
Every year in April, Durham Academy hosts the Durham County Special Olympics.
