Home Tour write-up: This gracious home was built for John Hoult, a prominent furniture manufacturer and his wife in 1908. Barkwell Construction was the builder. Mr. Hoult personally supervised the choice and placement of the woods in the home. Mr. Hoult was among the most prominent men in the furniture manufacturing business. His firm, Luce Furniture Company was at the time the largest furniture holding company in GrandRapids. He was vice-president of the Furniture Manufacturers Association and Treasurer of the Furniture Manufacturers Mutual Insurance Company. He lived in this home until his death around 1940. The was built in the Classic Revival mode, characterized by generally symmetrical appearance and an extended portico, supported by Classic Doric columns across the entire faade, emphasizing a central entrance. The cornices of both the verandah and roof are enriched with well spaced Modillions and the brick work is ofthe highest quality with raised corner quoining patterns which emulate pilasters. Piano-finish mahogany extends throughout the interior, except for the third-floor ballroom, where tongue and groove oak paneling is used. A woodwork feature of special interest is the ceiling-high mahogany fireplace mantel which was designed to surround a painting commissioned by Mrs. Hoult from a Dutch painter. The painting is still in place. The Hoult's Dutch heritage is further displayed by the original light fixtures andbeveled glass windows depicting tulips and a coat of arms.
