Mr. John Mowatt already lived at this address in 1873. He had country-wide reputation in furniture manufacturing.He an efficient carver; he began his career as superintendent of Berkey & Gay. Mr. Mowatt left Grand Rapids and returned in 1880. He then worked for the Grand Rapids Chair Company. He was vice-president and superintendent of this company, also director of the Imperial Furniture Company, and director of national City Bank.
