This house is said to be the original home of William McBain Jr. who was a General Manager of the Grand Rapids Plaster Company established in 1857 southwest of downtown Grand Rapids. William McBain Jr. would sell the house to James and Mary F (Powers) Bale who raised their two sons Richard Powers Bale and James Russell Bale here. Mary F. (Powers) Bale was a grandniece of William T. Powers, Grand Rapids mayor 1857. James Bale would also become General Manager of Grand Rapids Plaster Company.
