Hatch House - Walking Tour

Comments

Built in 1844-45, five years before Grand Rapids became a city, by Damon Hatch, this charming house is an adaptation of a square Greek temple with hip roof and a skylight over the atrium. The house is constructed of river limestone coated with stucco. The Greek Revival faade is particularly noteworthy. Mr. Hatch enjoyed sitting on his veranda watching the horse drawn streetcars as they made their way to the end-of-the-line at Eastern Avenue. His daughter rosewas, however, the belle of Grand Rapids and Cherry Street was called Rose Street in her honor.
