The Cottage Bar is a Grand Rapids institution, having been established in 1927 as a sandwich shop by Earl and Marie Coon and beginning the sale of alcohol in 1934 after the 1933 repeal of prohibition. This is the longest-standing liquor license in the city. Located in the Heartside-Downtown Neighborhood, the Cottage is a conveniently-located meeting place for before and after events at the Grand Rapids Civic Theater, Van Andel Arena, Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, or any other downtown venue.

The Cottage is famous for its chili, hamburgers, and cottage fries (deep-fried cubed potatoes). The Cottage is known for it's hamburgers, especially, the eponymous Cottage Burger, topped with olives, bacon, cheese, and hickory mayonnaise. They also have a happy hour

Each September, the Cottage hosts a chili cook-off.
