Motu Viget is a sculpture designed by Mark di Suvero in 1977. Its name comes from the city motto of Grand Rapids. Motu Viget is a large steel form with a massive rubber tire suspended in the air. because of this, the sculpture is popular referred to as "the tire swing." It is located at the NW corner of Calder Plaza.
In popular culture
Tire Swing, The opening track of Remember That I Love You—an album by Kimya Dawson released in 2006 on K Records—makes reference to Motu Viget. The song also features background vocals by Paul Baribeau, a former Grand Rapids resident. This song was featured in the 2007 feature film Juno and its accompanying soundtrack, which has moved many units since its release.
